The Key Elements to Algebra Success (KEAS)
Seven Levels of Staff Development Support

Level 1- Intensive Professional Development

The three-day, eighteen-hour workshop, prepares teachers to teach The Key Elements to Algebra Success (KEAS),key math concepts using unique methodology to meet the needs of emerging math students. The workshop is an intensive training in the content and pedagogy of all key lessons.

*Most districts will have a fourth day of training mid-year focusing on semester two lessons (refresher) and feedback received from teachers during semester one.

Level 2- Ongoing Coaching

A Coach visits each school on a regular basis to support teachers with proper implementation and methodology. During these visits, the Coach models lessons, team teaches, plans, observes, gives feedback, answers questions, and troubleshoots where needed.

Lead Teachers chosen at each school/district participate in an additional 6 hour training session. In lieu of a Coach, these Lead Teachers, while being a teacher of KEAS, act as lead contact for communication between National Training Network (NTN) and their district to their school. In doing so, Lead Teachers work in consultation with NTN to strategically embed KEAS lessons into the approved district pacing calendar, support teachers in their school teaching KEAS,provide email addresses for NTN distribution of e-letters, lead Professional Learning Communities for KEAS teachers, and inform teachers of the purpose and necessary preparation for upcoming workshops.

Level 3 - Regular E-Communication
Each teacher receives a regular e-communication containing information to enhance execution of upcoming key math concepts specific to Algebra I and district pacing. These e-communications are received weekly where coaching support is being provided or monthly in those districts where lead teachers are in place.
Level 4- Website -http://NTNmath.KEASmath.com

A resource for teachers, parents, and students, the website provides essential components of KEAS including lesson planning documents, lesson videos with demonstrations of all major concepts in both English and Spanish, downloadable homework assignments, and teacher lesson notes.

Level 5- Professional Learning Communities

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are continuing professional development sessions held throughout the school year and open to everyone involved with the implementation of KEAS, including teachers, classroom assistants, math department chairs, principals, district personnel, etc. These PLCs are led by the Coach and/or Lead Teacher.

Level 6- Demonstration Lessons DVD

DVDs of lesson segments reinforce concepts learned by teachers in the workshop and can be used in their classroom to introduce or revisit lessons, as well as by students following an absence from class or in need of additional assistance. Each teacher receives a set of instructional DVDs that contain short clips of each lesson in KEAS.

Level 7- Training of Trainers

Teachers are selected by their district and trained to build the capacity of the district to support ongoing implementation of KEAS. This five-day training prepares teacher leaders to conduct the three-day workshop with new teachers entering the district to sustain implementation.

" The KEAS program (materials and professional development) provides a great support of our ninth grade Algebra 1 teachers. It has allowed us to truly bridge from Aglebraic Thinking to Algebra 1 by building seamless connections to students' prior knowledge and learning experiences."
